lignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-949″ />Na prima gegeten en gedronken te hebben, vertrekken we veel te laat en te rozig naar het optreden voor vanavond: Tsunami Coffee House op Sunset Boulevard.
In de bus zijn we opgelaten en als je me niet zou kennen zou je wellicht zweren dat ik mensen aan het uitlachen ben. Als de omgeving donker wordt en we praktisch de enige zijn in de bus, vragen we ons af waar we zijn. De buschauffeur praat helaas geen Engels, iets wat best vreemd is. We stappen uit op een smalle weg, ingebouwd tussen twee rotswanden, waardoor we vermoeden dat we ons aan de rand van L.A. bevinden. Het heeft de sfeer van een film uit de jaren twintig, maar dat komt grotendeels door de alcohol, waardoor de fantasie paardensprongen begint te nemen. Er is één lantaarn en de rest is donker en als ik een sigaret op steek en de pluimen rook zie opstijgen, daarbij een diepe cellopartij naboots wordt de fantasie een beetje werkelijkheid. Keije schijnt zich ook niet bijster druk te maken over het optreden, al vindt ze wel dat dit de laatste keer is dat zoiets mag gebeuren. Alle optredens staan op de website en als mensen wel de moeite nemen om naar een optreden te gaan maar mij niet zien spelen, is dat een gemiste kans. Ik probeer me een beeld te vormen van de persoon die wel gaat maar mij niet één liedje ziet doen. Behalve Peter zou ik me niemand kunnen voorstellen. En zelfs hem zie ik niet de moeite nemen om naar een open mic te gaan, hoe goed hij het ook voor heeft met ons.

In oktober was ik ineens een maand weg samen met Keije. We hadden maanden ervoor bedacht hoe onwaarschijnlijk het zou zijn om zonder contacten iets voor elkaar proberen te krijgen in Hollywood. Het avontuur bleek veel groter dan ik me voorgesteld had. Ik heb er met drie producers kunnen werken, we hebben gefigureerd in een AFI film, ik speelde op Occupy L.A., ik kwam in een internetglossy, we hebben bij een Hollywood-regisseur gelogeerd, we kregen een proffesionele fotoshoot gratis aangeboden en hebben allerlei rare, toevallige magische momenten beleefd. Maar het was ook een verhaal van teleurstelling en tegenslag: te weinig geld, chips en water als ontbijt, irritaties onderling, veel beloftes die niet nagekomen worden, veel schijn weinig inhoud, het gemis aan de vrienden in Nederland en het continu moeten presteren.
Omdat het verhaal te bijzonder is om nooit meer verteld te kunnen worden, ben ik de afgelopen maanden druk bezig geweest om het in een boekvorm te gieten. Het valt niet mee. Ik beschrijf de gebeurtenissen per dag; ik heb vandaag dag 8 net afgerond en zit nu over de zestig pagina’s.
Het doel is om het boek natuurlijk snel af te hebben, aangekleed met de prachtige foto’s en samen met de vier liedjes tellende EP aan te bieden voor degenen die interesse hebben.
Tot die tijd kan ik jullie natuurlijk mooi teasen met fragmenten, waaronder deze – op dag 8.

Ik besluit met mijn gitaar aan de overkant van de straat te gaan zitten, op een muurtje, waardoor ik het verkeer kan zien, het hostel en alle voorbijgangers.
Het muurtje waarop ik zit is eigendom van het theaterschooltje, wat ik gefascineerd gadegeslagen heb sinds we hier kwamen overnachten. Er is zelden activiteit te bespeuren, een enkele keer heb ik een groepje acteurs buiten zien staan. Net als ik dat denk komen er een voor een mensen binnengelopen. De meesten begroeten me vriendelijk. Ik groet terug.
Meestal begin ik bij het maken van een liedje eerst wat op de gitaar te tokkelen, kijken waar de vingers me heenbrengen. Meestal is dat de beste manier om ergens te komen; dit geldt ook voor de voeten, je kunt ze beter volgen dan ze krampachtig proberen de weg te wijzen.
Terwijl ik tokkel komt er een taxi voorgereden en gaat pal in mijn gezichtsveld staan. Ik kijk om me heen of iemand misschien een taxi nodig heeft, maar er is niemand in de buurt. Na een tijdje wordt duidelijk dat de taxi in ieder geval niet van plan is weg te gaan.
De man ziet er moe uit – misschien is levensmoe een te sterk uitgedrukt woord voor zijn gemoedstoestand, maar het grenst er zeker aan. Hij is ook dikker dan hij zou willen denk ik en heeft flink wat zweetdruppels op het gezicht. Af en toe kijkt hij me aan, waarna hij weer strak voor zich uit kijkt. Zijn blik is chagrijnig.
Ik vind dit een vervelend tafereel. Als ik een liedje schrijf wil ik verdwijnen in de stad, anoniem zijn, de ruimte voelen. Niet continu in de gaten gehouden worden door een chagrijnige taxichauffeur. De irritatie blokkeert mijn flow merk ik, maar ik heb geen zin om ergens anders te gaan zitten, aangezien ik hier eerst zat. De man is duidelijk ook niet van plan te vertrekken, ook al is er niemand in de wijde omtrek die gebruik wil maken van zijn taxi.
Er zit niets anders op; ik moet een liedje schrijven over hem. En zo begin ik aan ‘Love is an option’. Ik probeer me te verplaatsen in zijn leven. Wat waren zijn dromen? Hoe heeft hij kunnen worden wie hij nu is? Terwijl ik speel en zoek, ben ik me bewust dat ik hem om de zoveel tijd aankijk. Als ik halverwege de tekst ben en in de basis de akkoorden en de melodie heb, besluit hij dat het mooi geweest is zo en rijdt weg. En zo kan het gebeuren dat een compleet onbekende taxi-chauffeur uit L.A. zijn eigen liedje krijgt….

In January we’ll be heading for the most important international festival Noorderslag, which will be filmed by our own newsprogram “NOS”.
Next year is scheduled for a new record and a lot of touring.

LOS ANGELES
October 2011 will be the month Simon conquered LA with his music. It all started when he performed his song ‘Till The Year 2012′ at Ocupy LA.
His performance got picked up by entertainment magazine Social Hollywood Magazine..
He also managed to get in touch with the former A&R manager of Peer Music, who introduced him to his friend Rodney Gordy, who works at Opus 1, the biggest music library in L.A. This is a big deal for now Simon’s music can be pitched for Movies and Television.
Simon played over 20 gigs and performed at a few legendary venues, such as The Rainbow Bar and Silverlake Lounge.
With a little help from several friends back home he managed to record songs at the Secret World Studio’s. known for it’s exclusive sound.
He also recorded a few songs with well known composers / producers Jason T. Miller (worked with Kanye West) and Marc A. Jacobs (American Idols).
Et voila; the EP ‘October’ is born. The truly unique thing is that all songs were written and recorded in LA.
On the last day Simon also had a photoshoot with the famous Paolo Mascatelli, which means that the artwork was also made there. Also contact was made with Lisa Richards, who is willing to look for more opportunities in London, UK.
The plan is to head back in May, 2012.

A BIT OF HISTORY
It all started with just me and my buddy Paul. We recorded the first album The Attic Tapes at Paul’s attic with minimal means. Though the album may have sounded less produced than others, people really fancied it. The songs sort of resonated with the things that people were worrying about. Though not many copies of the album were sold, Uncle Sam, Till The Year 2012 and Spirit Of The Times began to be local crowdpleasers.

Later, I contacted Moon Studio to record the album Time. When it was finished, I decided to put it online for free. Not only because I thought it was the best thing to do strategically, but also because I cared about the things I had written and I basically just wanted people to hear it.

FREE ALBUM TIME
It was in October 2010 that I spread the word on Facebook about Time. I saw the downloads rise from 0 to 5.000 within one month. It was an affirmation that money had nothing to do with why I became an artist, because I was overwhelmed by the idea that 5000 people had listened to my songs. It was an amazing feeling.

Soon enough I alerted the mainstream media and they were on top of the story. I got reactions from people all over the world, including one from an A&R manager* stationed in Los Angeles.

LIVE DVD
Around November 2010 I gathered the finest musicians in the field to start a band. Together with a team of excellent people, under the supervision of my brother, we made a live-recording, which turned into the DVD Into The Light. The songs were released one by one, once a week, including Till The Year 2012, Blue Marching Band and Spirit Of The Times.

Though the downloads keep rising and the music keeps spreading, in the end it’s all about the gift and the appreciation of that gift. For me it’s more than just playing music; I’m on a quest, in one of the most exciting times in my life.

So, as long as my heart is my compass and my voice remains sincere, I will make music as long as my lungs allow me to.

LOS ANGELES, October 18, 2011 –The Dutch Simon Keats, independent musician, performed his own protest song ‘Till the year 2012’ at Occupy LA. In a very generous and unconventional way he treats the people to his free online album Time (right in the above corner). He is on his way to find the bigger audience his songs deserve.

Last week he managed to find producer Jason T. Miller willing to record some new songs next week. Miller has produced and/or co-written songs for music artists including Kanye West and Keyshia Cole.

Peter Newman, former Creative Director at Peer Music, personally introduced Simon Keats to Rodney Gordy, Director Licensing, Opus 1 library. This is a major deal, for it will help to get the songs placed in movies, commercials and tv shows.

Keats’ assistant, who is currently traveling with him, met Newman in a Vintage Store on the first day in LA. She helped him when he was panicking for his lost cell phone. When the phone was found Peter asked if he could be of any help. That’s how Simon got introduced to Peter and so a new American dream is born.

“My personal comfort means less to me than the fact that as many people as possible should realize that we currently find ourselves in the biggest change ever. This change includes everyone and everything and it will be so successful that nothing shall be the same anymore. For this reason I write about it and throw it out there for free, just to help our shift in consciousness a little.” – Simon Keats.

Simon Keats came to Los Angeles on October the first and is working with the speed of light. Already he got to play at Occupy LA – City Hall, and was picked up by Social Hollywood Magazine. He also met Jason T. Miller (wo worked with Kanye West and wrote many movie/tv scores) and recorded th single ‘American Rose’ with him. Also, he was introduced to Opus 1, who is enthused to place his music in their Library. Which is a huge deal, because this way his music can be picked up to get placed under movies, commercials and TV-series.
